Steve Greiner

Mr. Stephen (Steve) Greiner, age 72 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed at his residence late Tuesday morning, Jan. 31, 2012.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Greiner, Talking Rock; brother-in-law, Howard Morris, Decatur, Ga; and sister-in-law, Mary Greiner. Several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

The funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Dr. Ben Langley officiating. Interment followed at 2 in West View Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga. Pallbearers were: Charles Norton, Jerry and Carlton Wilson, Terry Moss, Carl DeGolier and Charles Dunn. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made  to the Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund.

Jerry Appleton

Jerry Appleton was born March 9, 1937, in Nashville, Tn., to J.T. and Emily (Taylor) Appleton and died Feb. 2, 2012, while walking through his beautiful neighborhood of Hunters Ridge.

Jerry had a wonderful childhood in Nashville and enjoyed his high school days at West End High School where he played and excelled at most sports.  After high school he attended and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1959 with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Following graduation he worked in design with Sperry in Clearwater, Fl., and General Dynamics in Ft. Worth, Tx. In 1965 he joined Hewlett-Packard Company in Atlanta and remained with them in the southeast until his retirement in 1997. During that time he was a salesman, a sales manager and an area sales manager with responsibility for a large portion of the United States. He loved working for HP and believed in the HP Way.

After retiring from HP he and his wife Sue moved from Raleigh, N.C., to Wilmington, N.C., for 6 years where he pursued his love of restoring antique cars. Then in 2003 they moved to Jasper, Ga., to be closer to family and friends. Jerry has been an active member of the Optimist Club of Jasper as well as the Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Auxiliary and the community of Hunters Ridge.

Jerry leaves to miss him his companion and wife of 35 years, Sue; and his children, Becky Appleton Smith, Waleska, Jeff (wife Sarah) Appleton, Roswell, and Kurt (wife Tammy) Stafford, Colfax, N.C.;  grandson, Anthony (wife Cortney) Appleton, Redwood City, Ca.; and granddaughter, Tyler Appleton, Boca Raton, Fl. In addition, he leaves a sister, Barbara Appleton Paulson, Washington, DC; brother, Bob (wife Shearon) Appleton, Wilmington, N.C.’ and a sister, Susan Appleton Howell, Dacula, Ga., along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Roper Funeral Home in Jasper on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. preceded by visitation from noon to 2. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made in Jerry’s name to Pickens Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy (PO Box 2062, Jasper) or Piedmont Mountainside Hospital Auxiliary.

Herman Brooks

Mr. Herman Junior Brooks, age 64 of Jasper, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at his residence.

Survivors include his children, Shane Brooks, Ball Ground, Daniel Brooks, Canton, Cindy Dubois, Loganville, and Christy Brooks of Jasper; siblings, Martha Woodall, Linda Hughes and Kenneth Brooks, all of Ball Ground, Edward Brooks, Gaysville, Al., and Johnny Brooks, Free Home.  Four grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5, from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Weeks officiating.  Mr. Brooks will be cremated following the service.

Joyce Kerns

Mrs. Joyce Spivey Kerns, age 86 of Ellijay, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at North Georgia Medical Center in Ellijay following a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 3, 1925, in Bradenton, Fl., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Marian and Lula Lee Callaway Spivey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Egbert Kerns; and a son, William Thomas Kerns.

Mrs. Kerns was a homemaker and was the oldest member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cherry Log, Ga.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Gaskin, Ellijay, Ga., and Kathy K. Stanford (Jack H. Stanford, Sr.), Cherry Log, Ga.; granddaughters, Melissa M. Bagby (Rajay) of Indianapolis, In., Dr. Dawn S. Trollip (Brandon) of Raleigh, N.C., and Kelly Ann Constant (Nick), Fernandina Beach, Fl.; and great-grandchildren, Andrew O., Alex L. and Ashleigh D. Bagby, Cole S. and Sydney K. Trollip, Juliette G. and Emily I. Constant. Several other relatives also survive.

At her request, Mrs. Kerns was cremated and a memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cherry Log, with Dr. Paul Mims officiating. The family requests that donations be made in memory of Mrs. Joyce S. Kerns to the Cornerstone Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. 400, Cherry Log, Ga. 30522. Roper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Sybil Underwood

Mrs. Sybil Thompson Underwood, age 82 of Big Canoe, Jasper, Ga., died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at the Heritage Health Care in Jasper following a period of declining health.

Born August 19, 1929, in Hall County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles Emory and Mary Gertrude Leach Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Edgar Underwood; and a sister, Opal Thompson Harper.

Mrs. Underwood had worked as an administrative assistant with the American Insurance Company in Sandy Springs, Ga., and attended the Big Canoe Chapel in Big Canoe.

Survivors include step-sons and spouses, John Underwood, Atlanta, Ga., Bruce Underwood (Penny), Alpharetta, Ga., and Vin Underwood (Judy Thomas), Alpharetta, Ga.; step-grandchildren, Stephanie Underwood, Marietta, Ga., Rosemary Underwood, Cumming, Ga.;  Eliza Underwood and April Underwood, both of Atlanta, Ga.; niece, nephews and spouses, Jan Opal Harper Waters, James Harper (Emily) and John Harper (Mary); great-nieces and nephews, James Harper, III, Jason Harper, Adam McDaniel, Susan and Sarah Harper and Brandon and Jared Waters.

At her request, Mr. Underwood was cremated. A memorial service was scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Big Canoe Chapel, Big Canoe with the Rev. Lamar Helms  officiating. Jackie Richards

Mr. Anthony Jackson “Jackie” Richards, age 48 of Jasper, Ga., died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper following a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 6, 1963, in Tate, Ga., he was the son of the late Steve Paul and Betty Lynn Bearden Quinton. Mr. Richards was a self-employed painter.

Survivors include her sisters, Kim Richards Rainwater, Newnan, Ga.; Angela Richards Creason, Sharpsburg, Ga., and Angela Quinton, San Antonio, Tx.; and brothers, Rodney Quinton, Young Harris, Ga., and Randy Quinton, Morganton, Ga. Other relatives also survive.

Mr. Richards was cremated and no services will be held. Roper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
