Pickens and Jasper fire crews battled a blaze yesterday afternoon at a home on the grounds of the Salvation Army Camp in the Grandview area. A camp employee said the home was an older one on the property when the organization purchased the camp and had been renovated. It was used as an occasional residence for camp staff and visitors. No was living there when the fire broke out.
No injuries were reported among fire crews. An emergency responder on the scene said the large home with detached garage was about 50 percent engulfed when they arrived. With no fire hydrants at the site, they had little chance to stop it. Crews had to shuttle water in their tankers from fire hydrants nearby on Grandview Road and at the adjacent Younglife Camp.
